A brave young dad has gone off to war. He’s left his wife and his infant son at home. His first three months out in the field saw his squad in safe arms. In his forth month, the squad experienced an attack, that left 3 soldiers dead and 2 injured. Sadly, he was one of the three who had been killed. His comrades sent his body back to the States for burial. His wife must now face burying the man she loved, raising their child, and not having his love to get her through the day. His funeral was very well attended. His family and friends gathered together in remembrance of this brave young dad.
His son is barely old enough to know what is going on, and yet on the following his father’s interment into the earth, he lay awake crying. A stressed and depressed mother also lays awake trying to get words written into her journal between the shedding of her tears. As her son’s cries reach her ears, her writing takes a gentle pause. As her feet approach the door, the crying comes to an end. Quickly, she opens the nursery door. Inside the room, she sees her son fast asleep within his crib, but there is more to the room than just the scene of the sleeping child. There is such a strong feeling of peace, that she doesn’t want to leave the room. She sits in the comfortable rocking chair, that her husband was given by his grandfather. As if she were dreaming, a hug seemed to embrace her as she too descended into slumber.
What She Didn’t See
What She Didn’t See
A man sits not to far away in another sphere; a place of heavenly spirits who have returned to home. He hears and sees each little thing from smiles to tears, to frowns and laughs. He sits there watching and struggling over leaving the family, that he loves so much. He wants so badly to hold his son and kiss his wife, but all he can do is watch and listen. He knows what he’ll miss as his son grows from boy to man. He wishes that he could go back, but from this place there is no returning. In the blink of a second, no quicker than a second of time has passed, as he hears his son’s cries. Deep inside this man’s spirit, he knows his son is crying out for the father, he just saw buried. This night finds his son unable to fall asleep. As if through a mist, this spirit moves from one sphere to the mortal sphere, and finds his place right beside the crib that holds his crying son. His son cannot see nor hear his father’s presence in the room. This brave father stands by the crib and stretches out his hands. A gentle touch upon his son’s head somehow is noticed by the tearful babe. With a loving finger, a tear is touched in an attempt to brush the pain away. Glancing down up on the tearful youth, he catches sight of son’s eyes. Eyes that are the softest of blues, eyes that seem to be praying for his return. All he wants is to hold the infant whose cries have not yet hushed. Dad lowers his head towards his son’s face, and softly speaks to his little boy:
"Do not cry my son! I know you’ll miss me, and I’ll miss you too, but I’ll never be that far away. You may not see me, but I’ll be there. I love you little guy, I love you!"
With those words spoken, his son cries stop as smile comes across his son’s cute face. Once more his father leans down his face to speak once more to his big boy:
"Go to sleep and remember, Daddy loves you!"
Sleep seems to come quickly to the infant. Then as if on cue, his wife enters the room. Unaware that in front of her stands the man, she married for all time and eternity. He turns to her as she glances into the crib. He looks at her and knowing that she too has been crying. If he could just tell her, how much she means to him, then maybe time would pass quicker for her. She sits quietly in her rocker, and watches her baby sleep. Before he heads back into the mist, he bends down and hugs his wife. Then the mist gathers at the open door, it pleads with him to turn back. He turns back enters the mist, knowing for him time will pass in the blinking of an eye. He also knows that their love will last forever more and into eternity.
