Well, I just messed up big time. Our wireless network here at the house is dead. I have no clue how to fix it. My mom and my dad's computers both will not go online. I have no clue what I messed up but I did. And I really have no clue how to reverse it. I'm not even sure that I can afford for someone to undo my blunder. I'm pretty much in a horrid mood. Thanks for listening.
Musk ox are an interesting animal. First off, they are not a cow. Musk ox are in the family Bovidae, but they are closely related to an animal known as the takin. Sorry, I don’t have pictures of a takin for you. These animals are a ungulate. They, musk oxen and takins, are collectively called sheep-oxen. These large Arctic dwelling mammal get their name from the males strong smelling urine not from musk. Want to learn more about these mammals?
Here is your chance to learn a little bit more about these mammals. A musk ox is no small mammal. It is 6 ½ feet to 8 feet long, that includes the tail. They weigh in at 400 to 900 lbs. Like oxen, musk ox have horns. Horns which are found on both sexes. So how do they stay warm in the arctic chill? Musk oxen have two coats of fur. They also have some of the longest hairs found on any mammal. The hair on the neck and on the flanks grow to 3 feet long. They also huddle together in bad weather taking advantage of each other’s body heat. You can find musk oxen living on the open tundra. They were once found from Alaska to Greenland and islands above the Arctic circle. By the mid 19th century, all the musk oxen living in Alaska were wiped out. The species has been reintroduced into Alaska using wild stock from Greenland. They live in mixed herds. They feed on grasses, sedges, willows, and in the winter they feed on hardier, woody plants. They use their horns and their hooves to dig through the snow so they can get to the plants. During the late summer and into the fall, the males urine becomes much stronger smelling. The dominate males in each herd will chase away the other males from the herd. Breeding occurs every 2 years. Females usually have only 1 offspring. When danger threatens, the adults will surround the calves in a circle. They only break ranks to charge at the enemy. Their primary enemy is the Arctic wolf.
When I think of all the different animals around the world, and how man has mistreated them, it kind of makes me sad. Here is an animal, that was extinct in a portion of it’s original range. We killed this animal off. It was not some act of nature, that sent Alaskan musk ox to the grave. Still, we have made restitution by putting the species back into the circle of life in Alaska. Problem is not every animal species is going to be so lucky or has been so lucky. I can pick several animals out of my hat. They just happen to be birds, the Carolina Parakeet and the Great Auk. We, humans, killed off both species. Unlike the musk ox, these birds will never grace the earth again. We’ve lost a portion of the web of life. It is up to us to preserve the life on this planet. Well, I’ve said what needed to be said, and now, it’s time to go. One last thing, though before I go, take time to go out and enjoy the world around you. Take time to learn more about musk oxen and all the other inhabitants on this planet. Charles out!
Well on July 10th just five days before my birthday, I’m going in to see a cardiologist and perhaps to have a thallium ( spelled right ? )stress test. I guess after seeing my ekg results the cardiologist must have found something. Hopefully something that isn’t too terribly bad. Personally, I don’t think it’s anything bad. Any way, the cardiologist is wanting to do a stress test. What gets me pissed is that, I’ve already had one done. Granted, it has been two or maybe three years ago. This appointment will be with a different doctor then the one that I saw back then, but it will be at the same office. Apparently, this office must have a real problem with losing stuff. They have no record of my first test. My doctor’s office doesn’t have any record of their being a stress test, but they know that I had one. Believe me, I hate needles, so that fact that I got stuck with an I.V. is something that I remember. I am honestly hoping that, I end up not needing a stress test. Right now, I am not happy one bit. Any way, I’ve vented talk to you later!
A page in the current issue of Men’s Health magazine was really interesting. The title of the page is "Our Inalienable Rights". It’s basically a series of poll questions with responses. Men’s Health magazine polled 1,815 men. A couple of the questions really caught my eye, but I want to talk about only one of the questions right now. They asked the men, which freedom’s they valued the most. Some 41% of the men polled valued freedom of speech. 18% percent of men valued the right to bear arms. 17% chose freedom of religion as an important value. 8% valued the protection of private property. A whooping 8% valued protection from unreasonable search and seizure. 3% of them valued the freedom of the press. Only 1% of the men polled valued the freedom to peaceably assemble. We may hold different values on these freedoms, but our forefathers valued each and every one of the freedoms. We need to hold them dear.
The freedoms we enjoy as citizens of the United States were fought for by the brave men and women, who believe that freedom is and was fighting for and sacrificing for. These freedoms make our country great. Freedoms for some have come slowly for some people in our great country. Some are still fighting for their rights as we seem them. Still, we are greatly blessed even, if we don’t think so. They are important to each and every American. We may not value each one the same, but each one was given to us through blood, sweat, and tears. I’ve come to really value the freedom’s we share. Without the freedom of speech, we couldn’t raise our voices in disagreement. Without the freedom of religion, we might be stuck worshipping how the government would have us worship. I can’t just hen pick each and every freedom, what I do know is that I cherish our freedoms. My ancestors fought for them when the country was young. I said it earlier that, we are greatly blessed, and I strongly believe in that with all my heart. I know within certain communities, that we may think things are rough, but ultimately, it is our freedoms that allow us to raise our voices for change. With that sentence said, I’m going to close. Thanks for reading.
Have you seen "Clash Of The Titans"? Man, I love that movie. For as much as I love the movie, it’s stepped away from the original myth or at least the version of the myth that I have. As you may already know Perseus is the son of Zeus and a mortal woman. His mortal grandfather is King Acrisius. His mother’s father name is Danae. The maiden, he rescues is of course Andromeda. Hmm…Let’s see Athena is the goddess of wisdom and war. Hermes is the god of messengers. Now that you know some the major players in this myth it’s time to get going. I’m not going to tell you the entire myth but I will paraphrase bit and pieces of it.
Based on a prophecy given to him by an oracle, King Acrisius locks his daughter Danae into a room with and then seals her away. The prophecy said that his grandson born to Danae would kill him. Unknown, to King Acrisius Zeus had eyes on his daughter. Zeus visits with Danae and the rest is history. Danae gives bith to a baby boy. This birth does not make her father very happy. The king considers killing the baby until he hears that the baby was sired by Zeus, so he comes up with this really clever idea of locking his daughter and his grandson into a chest. He then throws the chest into the sea. Again, he shows his brains here because he assumes that if his daughter and grandson die that, Zeus will blame Poseidon ( Greek god of the sea and Zeus’ brother ). Zeus makes sure that the chest arrives safely on land. They are rescued by a kind fisherman who helps to raise Perseus. The king of this new land has his eyes set on Danae, but he doesn’t want Perseus around. Knowing how dangerous Medusa ( a monster who can turn flesh to stone ) is, the king sends Perseus to kill her and return the head. This provides, the perfect launching area for my myth Vs. Hollywood discussion
1.Perseus goes after Medusa as a weapon to destroy the Kraken, but as a favor or service to an evil king.
2.Zeus sends only Athena and Hermes to aid his son. Athena gives him the reflective shield. Hermes gives him a sword, which can cut through anything. There is no mention of him obtaining a robot owl. Nor any other god given gift.
3.Do you remember the three vile sisters, that Perseus visits in the movie? Hermes takes Perseus to them using his winged sandals. They are sisters to the gorgons. Medusa is a gorgon.
4.Perseus visits nymphs, nature spirits, who give him winged shoes so he can fly, a cap of invisibility, and a bag which can hold anything.
5.When Medusa’s head gets chopped off, there are no giant scorpions or other insects around, however Pegasus does emerge from the neck of Medusa.
6.Andromeda is from Ethiopia.
7.Poseidon sends a sea monster to eat Andromenda because of her mother’s vain boasts. Not some mean goddess who expected her to marry her freaky looking son.
8.The monster is killed by the sword not by the head of Medusa.
9.Andromeda’s father and mother are both turns to stone by the head of Medusa.
10.The king who sent Perseus away on this crazy mission ends up being turned to stone.
11.The oracle wasn’t lying after all. Perseus does in fact kill his mortal grandfather accidently with a discus while playing in some games.
Today’s doctor’s visit was really amazing. It was one of my better visits by far. My blood pressure was up a little bit. It’s up generally speaking when I’m in the office. My pulse was a little high. Last night, I was unsure if I had taken my verapamil, so I didn’t have the pill in my system. The doctor was sure that the pill was still in my system. He advised me not to keep forgetting it, which believe me I am not going to forget taking it. My cholesterol test which is a little lancelet perk to my left index even turned out half way decent. My overall cholesterol has dropped one level. My liver enzymes were fine. My HDL was fine. My LDL might have been a little up. He mentioned that my EKG had a little something weird on it, but that it has ever since I’ve been seeming him. Even that strange thing, my heart seems fine. All the other tests that’s been done on me has shown that my heart is fine just beats fast. The only bad part is that I’ve lost weight again L . Talk about a major let down. I knew that I had lost weight back in december, but I thought I had gained it back. Let me tell you, this weight has me really, really scared. If I can’t get my weight up, then the doctor is going to run a bunch of G.I. tests, upper and lower. Not looking forward to that! For the first time, the nurse asked me if I had a prostrate exam. Umm…no, it’s never been brought up before. They also asked about a colonoscopy ( sp ? ). Nope never had one of those either. Who knows though I might be having one by the time my next come along. Any way, that is what is new for now. OH….I almost forgot. He wanted to up my dosage on the lexapro. I don’t know if I told you, but the lexapro was making me nauseaseted. I’m not sure upping it would benefit me. Maybe if he used the lower dosage, but nope not going to go for the bigger dosage. One of the side affects of lexapro is weight gain, hence his reason for wanting me to take it. Now you know the whole story.
The Boomslang is one of the world’s venomous snakes. It can be found in the open bush areas of Sub-Saharan Africa. It’s venom is ranked as one of the most toxic in the world. It’s venom attacks the nervous system and also prevents blood from clotting. It’s venom is said to be even more potent than a cobra. Unlike cobras, who have large front fangs, boomslangs deliver their venom through fangs in the back of the mouth. In order for them to deliver a bite they must have a prolonged bite. Boomslangs are a fairly long snake They can reach 6 ft 8 inches long. Usually these snakes are green, but they can be yellow, red, blue, light brown or even olive brown. Boomslangs are arboreal in nature. They feed on birds, chameleons, and lizards. Boomslangs are also known to hunt on the ground. These snakes tend to rely on ambush when hunting their prey. Lucky for us, these snakes tend to be shy and seem to avoid contact with humans. Now, I’ve given you some facts and now it’s my turn to talk.
As many of you know, my tastes in animals are slightly different then most people. Still, I know my limits. You will never find a boomslang in my pet collection. I don’t agree with John Doe keeping venomous snakes. It’s a very dangerous hobby. Now, I do know there are some very skilled people out there who do have venomous snakes. These individuals love and understand their creatures. They know, that if they get bite, that their life might be at stake. I’m not talking to the expert pet keepers out there. I’m really talking to you, John and Jane Doe. Venomous animals do not make good pets. I’ve read numerous accounts of people being bit by their pets. Venomous snakes take a lot of money and time. Not only are they potentially dangerous, but in many places they are illegal. We live in a society where almost anything can be bought. I urge you not to keep venomous snakes, let them enjoy their lives in the wilds.
It’s important for us to understand these animals. It’s through are understanding that, we grow to care for these animals. Take time to read through the websites that I’ve linked up to this article. Visit your local zoo! Some of you maybe frightened by snakes, but still take the time to learn about these wonderful creatures. Through understanding and care, we learn to conserve our fellow dwellers on this planet. Go out there and learn what you can, then share it. Well, I’m gone for now! You’ve had a chance to learn about the world around you, now go out and enjoy it.
So what’s new in my life? Hmm…this weather is pure hell. I know that I’ve said it before but I hate cold weather and hate these extra warn days. For the past three days it’s been above 90 degrees and may very well get to 90 tomorrow. I feel so dead. Sweat has been pouring down my hair and my neck. It has to get cooler. Thanks goodness for fans. Yes, there is an air conditioning upstairs. Since it’s not my house, I don’t turn it on. I don’t want my parent’s freaking out.
On Friday, I am supposed to be going to the zoo. I’m braving a tour hour car trip with my brother’s family. It may very well be my great nephew’s first trip to a zoo. We are planning on going to the Fort Wayne zoo. I can’t wait for all the photo opportunities. I’m even debating buying another memory card just for this trip. See, I don’t want to use other people’s pictures for my presentations, so hopefully, I can use my own pictures depending on what pictures, I’m able to take. Well that is it for now! Stay Safe!
