I learned sometime back that wolves have been identified as a keystone species too, by their reintroduction into Yellowstone. By keeping the deer (or is it moose, I can't remember now) population down or at least moving about more, that means that certain trees and plants are allowed to grow more fully, they drop their seeds into local rivers, which has further impact on the health of the river and its animal inhabitants. I'm sure I'm missing lots of other effects. I just remember that even the biologiss involved with the study were a bit surprised at how much the wolf contributed to the health of the environment.
